Did you know how often we use plastic for packaging of daily items, packing of food and food storage to facilitate various work in our daily lives? Have you ever wondered, after the plastic is used where it will be disposed of or just thrown away?
However, most communities are aware of the impact of plastic use on the environment and health. They get information on the fact that plastic can not be biodegradable and will not be completely destroyed. If we do not immediately curb the problem of habit among us, there will be a very unpredictable plastic pollution.
According to a study of academic journals, Malaysia is the world's eighth worst country for plastic waste. It is estimated that Malaysia produced nearly one million tons of non-operating plastic waste in 2010, of which 0.14 to 0.37 million tons was washed down to the oceans.
Now in Malaysia face a big problem of the stack of serious plastic use. we often see plastic cups, plastic bottles, roadside straws, waterfronts, drains and garbage dumps. On the other hand, if placing plastic in a place that is not supposed to be and not managing the plastic waste will be harmful to the environment as well as provide a form of pollution air, water and soil.
Due to the increased increase in plastic use among us, illegal plastic waste manufacturers have taken the easy way to dispose of garbage by making open burning to remove plastic with the immediate rate on the surface of the earth. however, with open plastic combustion can contributing significantly to air pollution. Among the factors affecting us is the burning of plastic waste can emit dioxin, which is toxic to humans. They are carcinogenic and hormonal and disturbing hormones, and they accumulate in our body fat.
It also poses threat to sea and land animals where plastic bags are often eaten by many sea and land animals leading to death. According to the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, plastic debris kills an estimated 100,000 marine mammals, millions of birds and fishes annually.
There are some intermediate steps to reduce the use of plastic among others is:-
- Reduce single-use of plastic in daily life especially straws and plastic wrap.
- Use recyclable shopping bags.
- Avoid products containing plastic microbeads by looking for “polyethylene” and “polypropylene” on the ingredient labels of your cosmetic products.
- Recycle recyclable plastics.
In conjunction with the theme of World Environment Day , “Beat Plastic Pollution”, it is advisable for us to reduce single-use plastic and start practising recycling. Every single piece of plastic can cause the death of one single animal.
